A controversial newspaper giveaway of Prince's new album is to go ahead this weekend.

Copies of Planet Earth, not yet released in the UK, will come free with The Mail on Sunday in an industry first.

It's very telling that 7.15p (that's about 15 cents USD) is more than an artist makes on traditional sales of discs. They should be getting at least a couple dollars per. Otherwise, what's the point of putting out a disc on a major label when you could do them yourself and make $2-$5 per after expenses?

I suppose for that to be effective you'd need a local station that plays non-major-label music and a good manager to do the PR that the major label would otherwise do. But still. Pennies! Pennies per disc! It's insane!

But that is not considered stealing when the RCAA get the money!!

I think these people are living in glass houses and throwing stones.

I wonder how that translates on iTunes, how much the major label artists get for each song/album that sells.

I know a few people who have music on iTunes (shameless plug: including my father http://www.cliffodenkirk.com), but they're on their own labels or smaller indie labels, so I'm not sure if asking them what they get back would apply to what a major label musician gets back. Anyone else have any idea?

Thanks! I'm pretty fond of it too, but I might be a little biased! Also, I did the graphic design on pretty much all his cds, so I'm a little more biased because of that too.
