Big Business...
I am new to the WisMusic forums...I love the idea of being able to write reviews for music and cds...I'm a big music lover...so I know I can fun here.
For my first review, I'm going to do a review of the Tool concert from the fourth of July 2007. Tool was one of the headliners at this years summerfest...I haven't been to summerfest in quite a few years cause I've been out of state, so I was pretty glad to go this year.
Opening for Tool, was a band called Big Business...I had heard a rumor that Big Business was opening for Tool on "some" of the tour. On Big Business' web site I couldn't see any date for Milwaukee...and I heard from someone that they were in fact opening...Which was exciting for me. Big Business has been around a few years, and when I first saw them they were headlining a really small show in Cleveland about two years ago. They were playing with about 5 other bands, and I remember being blown away...it's just a drum and bass duo with an occasional guitar player (in fact their first album had Dale Crover on guitar, the drummer from Melvins). Anyway I could go on and on...but let's just say this, This is my THIRD time seeing Big Business...they played all new songs off their album "Welcome to the Waterworks" (Hydra Head Records, 2007). All in all my review of Big Business was that they were just as loud as ever if not louder...the new music is hot. The only problem I had with their performance was they felt a little more stiff then they ever have in past shows...they seem to have more freedom on a smaller stage. And also their set was too short. But still, they rocked.
After about 45 minutes Tool came out...the people were going crazy. This was my first time seeing Tool, I discovered Tool later in their career. I was really only turned on to Tool about 2 years ago...and then just studied their discography from that point on. My opinion of their newest album "10,000 Days" (Volcano Records, 2007) was that it was a little weaker then their other albums, but I was really looking forward to seeing it performed live. The first thing that I wanted to comment on was the stage set up. It was a very minimalist set up, White Stage...Adam Jones (Guitar) and Justin Chancellor (Bass) were at the extreme far sides of the state, where as Maynard (vocals) and Danny Carey (drums) were on a riser towards the back of the stage. This was all in front of four rear projection screens that displayed some crazy imagery...really beautiful imagery really.
The show itself just built up and built up until it mellowed out around the middle...It was at that point I left to use the bathroom, that down time was great though...I like droning music, and I do like droning portions of the music...but when they came back they came back with intensity.
I really enjoyed myself, they put on a great show...
Look for my next review as I will be reviewing the new Polyphonic Spree album, and a live concert experience as well.
Rock on,
Christian
